Week ahead: BoJ, BoE, Fed and U.S: jobs report in focus
(Sharecast News) - The coming week would feature policy meetings at the Bank of Japan, Bank of England and Federal Reserve, capped off by the monthly U.S. non-farm payrolls report on Friday. Investors would also be keeping close tabs on a heavy data calendar in the U.S., inflation readings in the single currency bloc and survey results due out in China.
There had been some recent market chatter that officials in Tokyo might tweak their policy of yield curve control, on Tuesday, in order to offset the upwards pressure from US rates.
For their part, top brass at the Federal Reserve were expected to keep rates on hold the next day, with some analysts of the belief that one last rate hike in December was still a possibility.
Fed funds futures on the other hand were at last count assigning odds of just 25% to that scenario.
Likewise, Bank of England officials were expected to stand pat, although Michael Hewson at CMC Markets UK believed that one or two of its four policy hawks would change their call to a hold.
Meanwhile, the lone dove on the Monetary Policy Committee, Swati Dhingra, might push for a rate cut, which in the case of sterling would mean putting the fox in the hen house, said Hewson.
"Given how sticky inflation currently is that would be a huge mistake when all the recent messaging has been of higher for longer," he added.
Across the Channel meanwhile, the key data points to look out for would be a reading for third quarter German GDP, on Tuesday, and another for euro area CPI in October.
The latter was expected to show a hefty slowdown in price gains both at the headline and core level.
Friday would bring with it the monthly U.S. non-farm payrolls report which was forecast to come in at 172,000, which would be down from 336,000 in September.
Also due out in the States were survey readings from the Institute for Supply Management for manufacturing and services sector activity during the month of October.
In China, Wednesday would see the release of survey compiler Caixin's factory PMI, followed by the services PMI on Friday.
