US open: Stocks slight higher as Amazon joins Dow Jones
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street stocks were slightly higher at the opening bell on Monday following last week's record-setting rally. As of 1545 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.17% at 39,196.43, while the S&P 500 was 0.01% firmer at 5,089.46, and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.20% stronger at 16,028.93.
The Dow opened 64.90 points higher on Monday, matching gains recorded in the previous session as blockbuster earnings from chipmaker Nvidia lifted sentiment throughout the week.
In focus early on Monday, Amazon joined the Dow Jones, replacing Walgreens Boots Alliance, increasing the blue chip's exposure to both technology and consumer retail.
On the macro front, new home sales rose 1.5% month-on-month in January, according to the Census Bureau, hitting a seasonally adjusted annualised rate of 661,000 and falling short of market expectations for a reading of 680,000. However, last month's reading still marked a second consecutive monthly increase in sales, in line with mortgage rates dropping during the first month of 2024. Sales soared in the Northeast and the West, while growth was at a slower pace in the Midwest and sales slumped in the South. The median price of new houses sold came to $420,700, while the average sales price was $534,400.
No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Monday.
