FTSE 100 movers: Next gains on results; Glencore goes ex-div

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was down 1% at 7,709.78 in afternoon trade on Thursday. Glencore, St James's Place and Admiral all fell as they traded without entitlement to the dividend.

Retailer Next was the standout gainer on the index as it backed its full-year guidance and posted a smaller-than-expected drop in first-quarter sales.

In the 13 weeks to 29 April, total full-price sales edged down 0.7%, but Next noted that this was moderately ahead of its guidance for a 2% decline.

The company maintained its guidance for full-year pre-tax profit of £795m and earnings per share of 501.9p. It also continues to expect a 1.5% fall in full-year sales.

Hargreaves Lansdown was also a high riser after well-received first-quarter results, while oil giant Shell rallied as it beat forecasts to post a first-quarter net profit of $9.65bn, although down 2% year-on-year due to lower oil and gas prices.
