US open: Dow Jones continues to march higher
(Sharecast News) - Wall Street stocks were mixed at the opening bell on Wednesday as the S&P 500 neared an all-time high. As of 1520 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.14% at 37,596.15, while the S&P 500 was down 0.06% at 4,772.00 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.09% weaker at 15,061.46.
The Dow opened 50.82 points higher on Wednesday, while the S&P 500 hovered near a record high, sitting within 0.5% of its best close.
As far as Wednesday's headlines go, US mortgage applications dropped 1.5% in the week ended 15 December, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association, halting a six-week run of increases. Applications to refinance a home dropped by 2% month-on-month, but remained 18% higher year-on-year, while applications to purchase a home dropped 1%.
Last week's fall comes despite benchmark Treasury yields continuing to decline following dovish signals sent by policymakers at the Federal Reserve.
Elsewhere, the Richmond Federal Reserve manufacturing index dropped to -11 in December, down from -5 in November and the lowest reading in ten months. However, December saw an increase in average growth rates for prices paid and prices received, along with a slight rise in expected price changes over the next 12 months.
