FTSE 100 movers: Miners, housebuilders in the red
(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was flat at 8,776.20 in afternoon trade on Tuesday. British Gas owner Centrica was the standout gainer on the index.
Defence firms Babcock, Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems were also on the front foot again after the UK government announced plans on Monday to build up to 12 attack submarines as part of AUKUS programme and invest £15bn in its warhead programme.
Educational publisher Pearson was the biggest loser on the top-flight index after Australia's IDP Education warned of a big drop in testing volumes.
Miners Anglo American and Rio Tinto were both weaker after disappointing Chinese manufacturing data.
The Caixin/S&P Global manufacturing purchasing managers' index fell to 48.3 in May from 50.4 in April, missing expectations for a reading of 50.7. It marked the lowest level since September 2022.
A reading above 50.0 indicates growth, while a reading below signals contraction.
Housebuilders Barratt Redrow and Persimmon slumped after a profit warning from MJ Gleeson.
