Tuesday preview: UK employment, B&M European Retail in focus
(Sharecast News) - Investors' focus on Tuesday will be on the latest UK employment data. At 0600 GMT, the Office for National Statistics is expected to announce that the rate of growth UK in average earnings, excluding bonuses, ticked higher by a tenth of a percentage point over the three months ending in February to reach 6.0%.
For City analyst Michael Hewson, recent trends in wage growth are key, to which one must add the expected increases in the national minimum wage and in pensions.
"The Bank of England will be reluctant to signal that they are anything less than committed to hitting their inflation target, despite the weakness of the UK economy," Hewson told clients.
Indeed, the March claimant count was expected to reveal a hefty increase of some 30,000.
In the euro area meanwhile, the ZEW institute's closely followed economic confidence index for April will be released at 0900 GMT.
It will be followed, at 1230 GMT, by the latest import price data out of the US.
B&M European Retail will be in focus on the corporate front, with the discount retailer due to release its fourth quarter numbers.
The discount retailer's shares have been under pressure since the start of 2024 and were demoted from London's top-flight index in December.
Its board is also currently looking for a replacement chief executive officer.
