Thursday preview: US CPI, ECB in focus

(Sharecast News) - All eyes on Thursday are likely to be on the latest reading on the cost-of-living in the US. At 1230 BST, the Department of Labor is expected to announce that the headline rate of CPI in the US rose by 0.3% over the month and 2.9% year-on-year (Previous: 2.7%) during the month of August.

Core CPI meanwhile is pegged to come in at 3.15% in annual terms after a reading of 3.1% for the previous month.

Against that backdrop, a quarter of an hour later the European Central Bank is scheduled to announce its latest interest rate decision.

Consensus is that rate-setters in Frankfurt will keep the deposit rate unchanged at 2.0%.

At 1700 BST, the US Treasury is scheduled to hold an auction of 30-year debt, the results of which will probably be closely watched by all market participants.
