Heathrow passenger numbers jump in September

(Sharecast News) - More than 7m passengers travelled through Heathrow Airport last month, the hub said on Monday, making it the busiest September on record. According to figures published by Heathrow, 7.35m people used the airport in September, up 0.8% year-on-year.

In the year to date, 63.28m used the west London hub's four passenger terminals, just 0.3% up on the same period a year previously, as capacity constraints remained an issue.

Heathrow wants to spend £49bn expanding and modernising the airport, including a long-anticipated third runway, a new terminal - called T5X - and a wider stretch of motorway at one of the M25's busiest junctions.

The government has signalled it will back the privately financed project, arguing that it will bolster the UK's economy.

However, environmental and some local groups remain opposed.

Thomas Woldbye, chief executive, said: "We continued to lead the pack in global connectivity [in September], all the while keeping the passenger experience smooth for millions.

"It's a clear sign that Heathrow is vital to the UK's economic growth and why we will continue to invest in our airport."

Should the plans go ahead, Heathrow expects the expansion to complete within a decade.
