FTSE 100 movers: Barratt Redrow rallies; Fresnillo loses its shine

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was up 0.4% at 10,696.83 in afternoon trade on Wednesday. Rate-sensitive housebuilder Barratt Redrow was among the top gainers as gilt yields fell, with property stocks British Land, LondonMetric and Land Securities also up.

Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, pointed to commentary from Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey and chief economist Huw Pill. "Pill was sceptical that four rate hikes are needed for the UK in the next year, which is leading to a recalibration in UK interest rate swaps pricing," she said.

"In general, comments from the world's most senior central bankers have been moderately dovish this week. Huw Pill and the ECB's Christine Lagarde have both said that second round effects from the energy price spike are not a problem at this stage. This reduces the need for central banks to hike rates as aggressively as the market currently expects."

Luxury fashion brand Burberry was the standout performer on the index, although there was no obvious reason for the move. Earlier in the week, it emerged that Mike Ashley's Frasers Group had increased its stake in the company to 7.4%.

Fresnillo was in the red as JPMorgan cut its price target on the precious metals miner to 4,600p from 4,700p but maintained its 'overweight' rating.
