Important information: the value of investments and the income from them, can go down as well as up, so you may get back less than you invest.

If you’re new to investing, or finding it difficult, you’re not alone. Many people feel unsure when making financial decisions: ‘What are my goals?’, ‘Where should I invest?’ and ‘How much risk should I take?’

When asking yourself these questions, sometimes all you need is a little extra help to get started and feel more confident about the decisions you make.

That’s why we’ve come up with a list of different resources - all in one place - that you can use to invest with confidence.

Read at your own pace or jump to the relevant sections below.

Our guides - start building your knowledge

We offer a range of guides designed to support you as you get started, while still offering useful insights as your confidence grows. We recommend taking your time to explore each page and build your knowledge at your own pace.

  • Investing for beginners - learn the basics of investing with simple guides that explain how investing works, the different account and investment options available, and how to get started with confidence.
  • Principles for good investing - use our five guiding principles to help you make smarter investing decisions, build your knowledge and understand how to grow your investments over time, whatever your goals may be.

Planning tools - know your options and possibilities

Our planning tools are there to help you understand your options and see how your money could grow, so you can make clearer, more informed decisions about your future.

  • Choosing accounts - find the right account for you by answering three simple questions about your goals, when you’ll need the money, and how much you want to invest.
  • ISA Calculator - see how your savings could potentially grow over time in a Stocks and Shares ISA by entering how much you want to invest, choosing how long to invest for and a growth level.
  • Retirement calculator - find out if you’re on track for the retirement you want by completing a short quiz. You’ll receive an estimate of your future income and whether it could support your ideal lifestyle.
  • Power of small amounts - see how increasing your monthly savings by even a small amount could make a real difference to your pension pot over time.
  • X-ray tool - understand what your portfolio is made up of by viewing a breakdown of your investments by region, asset type, sector and underlying companies, helping you spot where you may be too heavily invested in one area. You can access this through your online account by selecting ‘Account Holdings Report’ from your account summary page.

Investing tools - help with choosing investments

Our investing tools help you choose and manage investments more easily. Whether you want guidance, ready-made options or more control over your choices, we have a variety of options available.

  • Ready-made ISA - open an ISA with a diversified fund in three steps - so you can invest without needing to pick and manage investments yourself.
