FTSE 100 movers: M&S rallies on broker note; Compass in the red

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was 0.4% higher at 10,566.73 in afternoon trade on Tuesday. Marks & Spencer jumped to the top of the index as JPMorgan lifted its price target on the stock to 450p from 440p and reiterated an 'overweight' rating as it argued that the turnaround is gaining traction.

Defence firm Babcock was a high riser after Prime Minister Andy Burnham appointed former Defence Secretary John Healy as chancellor.

Dan Coatsworth at AJ Bell, said: "UK defence stocks motored higher on Healey's appointment, given his previous role in pushing Keir Starmer to agree to higher defence spending.

"The market is taking the view that defence is close to Healey's heart, and he will drive through increased funding under his new role as chancellor."

Caterer Compass Group fell despite saying it had delivered another "strong" quarter, posting 7.1% organic revenue growth as net new business accelerated into its 4-5% target range, which it expects to hit for a fifth straight year.

LSEG was also lower as it announced plans to introduce 24-hour trading. LSE 24 will be available for client testing by the end of this year, it said, with Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) launching as the first asset class in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
