FTSE 100 movers: Miners rally; AstraZeneca in the red

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was flat at 7,529.05 in afternoon trade on Monday. Miners were the standout gainers as metals prices rose, with Anglo American, Glencore, Antofagasta and Rio Tinto all higher.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, said: "There is also improved sentiment towards the Chinese economy, reflected in strong gains for miners on the FTSE 100 on Monday.

"Now some of the disappointment about a slower than expected post-Covid recovery has eased, the focus is turning to potential financial stimulus and support which could have positive implications for metals and energy demand."

On the downside, AstraZeneca slumped as it announced the results of a high-level study of a new lung cancer drug.

CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson said: "The outcome of the trial was a positive one, however analysts have suggested a lack of clarity over survival improvement rates is behind today's share price weakness.

"This comes across as a bit of an overreaction given that the data is still being analysed, and its one drug of many, nonetheless today's weakness is acting as a more than 50 point drag on the index."
