FTSE 100 movers: Housebuilders gain on spending review

(Sharecast News) - London's FTSE 100 was up 0.3% at 8,875.88 in afternoon trade on Wednesday. Asia-focused Prudential and Standard Chartered were among the top gainers after the US and China agreed a trade deal.

BT Group was also in the black following a report it is plotting a rescue of TalkTalk as an escalating cash crisis threatens disruption in the broadband market.

According to City sources cited by the Telegraph, the former state monopoly is in the early stages of exploring a takeover of TalkTalk and its 3.2m customers.

Engineering firm Weir Group advanced after being awarded a £40m sustainable tailings solution contracts for one of the world's largest tailings storage facilities in Talabre, Chile.

Housebuilders Persimmon and Barratt Redrow gained after Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in the spending review a £39bn investment in housing, which she called the "biggest cash injection into council and affordable housing for 50 years".
