Why we like the fund: This fund invests in private infrastructure projects and companies, such as electric, gas and water utilities, renewable energy, hospitals and care facilities, toll roads, railways and digital cabling. These investments tend to be in partnership with the government and have a steady, reliable source of customers who are dependent on them for their daily lives. This creates a steady income stream and one that is usually linked to inflation (therefore providing an inflation hedge). The fund invests primarily in UK infrastructure, with around 25% invested outside the UK. The team is highly experienced, well-resourced, locally-based and dedicated to infrastructure investing. They tend to invest early in projects and stay invested for the long term. How to use the fund: This is an investment trust, which gives the manager more freedom to invest relative to an open-ended fund. For example, it can borrow money to invest and it does (albeit to a limited degree). This fund could be a useful addition to a portfolio with an income requirement (and some inflation protection). Investors in the fund may experience periods of capital loss, although these have been temporary in the past.
