Investment objective
The sub-Fund aims to outperform (after deduction of costs) the TOPIX, as stated in Sterling, by at least 1.5% per annum over rolling five-year periods. The sub-Fund will invest at least 90% in shares of Japanese companies being those which are listed, incorporated, domiciled or conducting a significant portion of their business in Japan. The sub-fund will be actively managed and will invest in companies of any size and sector.

The Baillie Gifford Japanese Fund is managed by Matthew Brett and aims to produce attractive capital growth over the long term through investment in Japan.

Baillie Gifford is a world leader in Japanese equity investing. Its Edinburgh-based team of Japan specialists is the largest outside of Japan.

The manager asserts that ‘when you invest in Japan, you are getting exposure to companies at the forefront of technological advancement... If you want a robot [to use in manufacturing] you basically have to go to Japan.
