Our view
- Ben Wallace and Luke Newman who manage the fund aim to produce positive returns in both rising and falling markets
- They can take both long and short positions in order to express views on individual companies
- Strong focus on UK equities
Ben Wallace and Luke Newman are co-portfolio managers on this fund. Both have a wealth of experience managing UK equity and absolute return products. Wallace and Newman worked together at Gartmore before its acquisition in 2011 and have continued to work together on this fund.
The managers of this fund can take both long and short positions in order to express views on individual companies and occasionally on sectors and the trends impacting them from a macro perspective. They traditionally focus on UK equities, which form the core of their exposures.
The fund has a core and a tactical element. The core element focuses on companies they expect to show long-term structural growth or decline. The tactical element is focused on taking short term positions, although these are some times company specific, they can also be related to macro events or changes in government policy.
The main benefit of this fund is that it aims to offer returns which are significantly more stable than that of a long-only exposure, with typically limited drawdowns. Furthermore, it offer some diversification value compared to long-only funds.
