Investment objective
The aim of the Fund is to provide a return on investor's investment (generated through an increase in the value of the assets held by the Fund) (gross of fees) over the long term (5 or more consecutive years beginning at the point of investment) by investing in equities (i.e. shares) of companies incorporated or listed in Europe excluding the UK. In seeking to achieve its investment objective, the Fund will invest at least 70% of its total assets in the equities (i.e. shares) and equity related investments (i.e. other investments whose value is related to equities) of companies incorporated or listed in Europe excluding the UK. Typically these will be larger companies.

Why we like the fund

This fund is managed by two capable investors who apply a patient, high conviction approach to investing in high quality companies. They are part of a large group of European portfolio managers and analysts at Blackrock covering the European universe. The strategy seeks to invest in a scarce number of companies in Europe that generate sustainable and profitable growth with some form of competitive advantage. The portfolio holds between 30-60 stocks with a skew towards defensive businesses that can perform without too much influence from the economic cycle.

How to use this fund

Blackrock's portfolio is modestly concentrated and will differ meaningfully from the overall Europe market. The team take a long-term perspective holding companies for 5 years and allocating to this fund requires a similar level of patience from investors. The fund will tend to lag the market when cyclical sectors (e.g. Energy and Financials) outperform or when the market rises sharply on the back of rapid economic growth. It will tend to offer defensiveness when the economic or market environment is weaker. This fund can be held as a core European holding if the investor has a long-time frame and willingness to accept shorter-term underperformance.
