Investment objective
The sub-Fund aims to outperform (after deduction of costs) the MSCI Japan Small Cap Index, as stated in Sterling, by at least 1.5% per annum over rolling five-year periods. The Sub-fund will invest at least 90% in shares of smaller Japanese companies, being those which are listed, incorporated, domiciled or conducting a significant portion of their business in Japan. The Subfund will be actively managed and will generally invest in smaller companies in any sector, being companies which typically at the time of initial purchase have a market capitalisation which is smaller than or equal to the market capitalisation of the largest company in the MSCI Japan Small Cap Index.

Fund manager biography
Mr. Lum is a portfolio manager in the Manager's International Growth Research Team and became a member of the International Growth Portfolio Construction Group in May 2015. He also Chairs the Manager's International Smaller Companies Portfolio Construction Group. Mr. Lum joined Baillie Gifford in 2006 and initially worked in the North American and Emerging Markets departments, before spending a number of years focused on investment in smaller companies. Mr. Lum graduated MSci and BA (Hons) in Physics from the University of Cambridge in 2006.

Jared is an Investment Analyst in the Global Alpha Team. He joined Baillie Gifford in 2016 and has also spent time working in the Fixed Income, UK, and Japanese Equity Teams. Previously, he worked for two years as an Assistant Economist at the Scottish Government. Jared graduated MA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Edinburgh in 2012.
