US open: Stocks start week on mixed note, US CPI and Trump inauguration in focus

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street was trading on a mixed footing at the start of the week, as the downward pressure from the week before appeared to carry over into the current one. Contributing to the selling, the stronger-than-expected reading on US non-farm payrolls for the month of December was still reverberating through financial markets, as were geopolitics.

Some market observers were also increasingly looking out to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on 20 January in anticipation of greater clarity on his policy proposals in the weeks afterwards.

As of 1631 BST, the Dow Jones Industrials was trading higher by 0.31% to 42,069.63, while the S&P 500 was off by 0.60% to 5,792.06.

The Nasdaq Composite meanwhile was falling 1.33% to 18,906.57.

In parallel, front month West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures were jumping 2.17% to $78.74 a barrel on NYMEX, following the tightening of US sanctions on Russian oil during the previous Friday.

Ten-year U.S. Treasury note yields were also continuing to push higher, rising by three basis points higher to 4.798%.

The likes of Palantir, Nvidia, Tesla and Micron were all lower again, as surging bond yields weighed on demand for growth-oriented shares.

On the macro front, the Federal Government's monthly budget statement will be published at 1900 GMT.

Later in the week, all-important producer and consumer price index reports will be released on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, while Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America will all report Q4 earnings before the week is out.
